Here's an exerpt from my anatomy notes on the large intestine:

9 ) Digital Rectal Examination of prostate gland can be performed through the anal canal because of the positional relationships and the experienced sensitivity of the examining finger (the latter of course assumes the reflexive crushing squeeze of the examinee’s anal sphincter has not reduced the finger’s sensitivity to that of a mere wooden stick).
